CAKE follows a single mother determined to give her son a meaningful birthday, not through extravagance, but through presence, care, and perseverance. It reflects the quiet heroism I’ve witnessed in many families, particularly within working-class and immigrant communities, where love often reveals itself through small, unseen acts. This project is deeply personal to me, as it is inspired by my own seventh birthday. The story explores themes of economic hardship, the desire for belonging, and the unbreakable bond between mother and son, as well as a neighborhood that comes together on a special day. Set in the bustling, diverse city of Chicago, the film treats community not as background, but as an active force in shaping resilience and hope. At its core, CAKE is about dignity. It’s a reminder that meaningful stories don’t always announce themselves loudly. Sometimes they live in kitchens, grocery stores, and in the quiet determination of a parent doing their best. This film reflects my ongoing interest in telling human stories that resonate across audiences while remaining honest, specific, and rooted in community.
